雷鋒在日記中詳細的記錄另外他在不對的點點滴滴，他在入伍第一天寫道：今年1月8日，是我永遠不能忘記的日子，我光榮地參加了中國人民解放軍，實現了自我最崇高的愿望。祖國啊！到處都有我慈祥的母親中國共產黨對我的親切關懷和照顧。我到達部隊的頭一天，因為乘火車時車廂里熱，我脫掉了衣服，下車受了涼。深夜睡不著覺，止不住地咳嗽，發燒，有時還發冷。下半夜了，營長來到我們宿舍，有的同志被子沒有蓋好，他輕輕地給蓋好。他發現我還沒睡，走到我身邊見我咳嗽，就輕聲問：你感冒了么我說：沒什么。當時我想，這點小病還是不告訴首長好，以免麻煩首長。營長連夜查鋪兩三次，發現我一向沒睡，明白我感冒了，就從衛生連叫來一位醫生給我診治，吃了藥，叫我好好睡覺。親如爹娘的營長啊，怕我凍著，脫下自我的棉大衣，還送來一床新被子，都蓋在我身上。我激動的淚水流濕了枕頭，我真想掏出自我的心來獻給黨，我下定了決心，入伍了，必須要好好地為人民服務。
